Bone Cancer Definition
By Antin. Cancer is uncontrolled growth of the cell. The cancer cells begin to grow then divide out of control and also become abnormal and have altered functions in patients with cancer. Bone cancer is a malignant (cancerous) tumor of the bone that destroys normal bone tissue.
We called bone cancer/primary bone cancer if the cancer starts in bone cell. Secondary bone cancer is cancer that spread into bone from another type of primary cancer. Common cancers that spread to the bones include breast, lung, prostate, and kidney cancer. In fact, secondary cancer is more common than primary cancer.
If you have cancer, it’s very important to know the type of your primary. Cancers respond to treatment according to the type of primary cancer. So lung cancer in the bones will respond to treatments for lung cancer.
The types of primary bone cancer are:
- Osteosarcoma, bone cancer that occur primarily in growing bone tissue
- Chondrosarcoma, bone cancer that occur in cartilage
- Ewing’s sarcoma, bone cancer that primarily in immature tissue in bone marrow
- Fibrosarcoma is much rare than the other bone tumors that most commonly affect the soft tissues of the leg behind the knee.
- Chordoma is a very rare bone cancer that most commonly affect either the lower or upper end of the spinal column.
