Breast Cancer Treatment
Surgery on Breast Cancer Treatment.
By Antin. Breast cancer treatment depends on the stage of cancer. TNM Staging is commonly used worldwide to make a breast cancer treatment plan. Judging the tumor, or tumors, the nodes and if it has transferred to a different part of the body, also known as metastases. Once these items have been evaluated, the doctor will decide which the right breast cancer treatment for the patient.
There are two main types of breast cancer: high grade and low grade. High-grade breast cancer is cancer that has a large risk for coming back even after surgery. In this case, the breast cancer treatment plan is chemotherapy after the patient has healed from surgery.
Mostly breast cancer treatment includes a surgery. The most common type of surgery for breast cancer treatment is called conservative surgery. This breast cancer treatment means that the surgeon removes the diseased tissue from the breast, being careful not to take too much healthy tissue. While he is removing the cancer, a small amount of healthy tissue is removed as well. This is then sent to the lab for evaluation. If the lab reports that it is ‘clear’ or ‘healthy’, the surgeon knows he got all the cancer.
Surgery on breast cancer treatment includes lumpectomy, mastectomy, and lymph node removal. Lumpectomy means removing the tumor in the breast through surgery. Many women prefer this breast cancer treatment because it allows them to keep most of their breast. Mastectomy is the removal of the whole breast through surgery and often some or all of the axillary lymph nodes as well. Lymph node removal involves removing some or all of the underarm lymph nodes. It is usually performed on patients who have undergone a mastectomy to check whether the cancer has spread outside the breast or not.
Some women follow an additional treatment as well, such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy and medication, in order to stop the cancer from growing and spreading.
