Breast Cancer Types

By Antin. Breast cancer types are classified by whether it starts in the ducts or lobules, the organs that produce breast milk. Breast cancer has many various name to explain the types of cancers that happen in the breast. Most of them could be categorized into one of the classifications: infiltrating ductal carcinoma, infiltrating lobular carcinoma, ductal carcinoma in situ, lobular carcinoma in situ, inflammatory carcinoma, paget’s disease, and cystosarcoma phyllodes.

The most widespread breast cancer types are ductal carcinoma and lobular carcinoma. Ductal Carcinoma: origins in the cells which line the breast’s ducts, under the nipple and areola. The ducts provide milk to the nipple. Between 85% and 90% of all breast cancers are ductal. There are two kinds of ductal carcinoma: DCIS (ductal carcinoma in situ) and infiltrating ductal carcinoma. DCIS is well enclosed, not invasive, and could be especially effectively treated by lumpectomy, if the tumor margins are obvious of cancer, follow-up treatment might contain radiation. Infiltrating ductal carcinoma has broken into close breast tissue (invasive cancer) after that a mastectomy might be required and followed by chemotherapy.

Lobular Carcinoma: origins in the lobes, or glands which create milk in the breast. The lobes are placed deeper within the breast, beneath the ducts. Roughly 8% of breast cancers are lobular. LCIS (lobular carcinoma in situ) means the breast cancer is restricted inside the lobe and has not extended. It might be detached for the period of a lumpectomy, if the tumor margins are obvious of cancer, follow-up treatment might contain radiation. Extended lobular cancer has invasion into close breast tissue. So, a mastectomy that followed by chemotherapy is suggested to treat this kind of lobular cancer.

Other term that is used to describe breast cancer is metastatic and locally advanced breast cancer. Metastatic breast cancer means the cancer has extended to distant organs such as bone, lung and liver. Locally advanced breast cancer has not broadened to another area but characterized by breast tumor that bigger than 5 cm across, growing into the skin or muscle of the chest and present in the lymph nodes in the armpit, and these lymph nodes are either stuck to each other, or other structures

Although advanced breast cancer applied to be a death term, now this is not essentially so if appropriate treatment is taken. We have completed remarkable strides in learning how to assist the patient with later breast cancer. Selecting the proper treatment could factually make the difference between life and death.
