Inflammatory Breast Cancer
By Antin. Inflammatory breast cancer is a rare form of breast cancer. It is estimated to occur in only 1 - 3% of all breast cancer patients. Inflammatory breast cancer usually occurs in post-menopausal women, but cases have been found in girls as young as 12 and in men. Inflammatory breast cancer has a higher mortality rate because it is often misdiagnosed in the early stage.
Some women who suffer inflammatory breast cancer might stay behind undiagnosed for extensive times, even while observing their doctor to find out the cause of her symptoms. The symptoms are like mastitis, a breast infection. The doctors who do not understand inflammatory breast cancer will prescribe antibiotics.
Give attention to the symptoms of inflammatory breast cancer. Changes in breast such as one breast becomes larger than the other, swelling of breast, pain and/or the breast feels itchy or ridges or thickened areas of the breast are some symptoms of inflammatory breast cancer. Some changes on breast skin can also happen on inflammatory breast cancer like skin is warm or hot to the touch, orange like texture to the skin, skin has a red or pink coloration, entire breast or a small portion of the skin breast has a rash. Sometimes there is a discharge from the nipple or the nipples appear to be flattened or inverted.
If you have any of the above symptoms which persist for more than a week it is necessary to see the doctor. Many of these symptoms mimic those of a breast infection, or mastitis. Mastitis will respond to antibiotics. Inflammatory breast cancer, which has been documented in breast-feeding women, does not cause a fever nor respond to antibiotics. If a reaction to antibiotics is not obvious later than a week, a biopsy ought to be made or a medical appointment to a breast authority is warranted. You may have to be very aggressive to get the proper diagnosis of inflammatory breast cancer. This is vital because the earlier this is diagnosed, the sooner you can begin treatment and the better your survival chances.
