By Antin. Lung cancer is overgrowth of abnormal cells in the lungs. The cancer cells can invade nearby tissues and form tumors. Lung cancer can arise in any part of the lungs and disturb any part of the respiratory system.

Normally, human body has a system of checks and balances on cell growth so that cells divide to produce new cells only when needed. Disruption of this system results in an uncontrolled division and proliferation of cells that eventually forms a mass known as a tumor. There are two types of tumor, benign tumor and malignant tumor (cancer). Benign tumors do not spread to other parts of the body. On the other hand, malignant tumors can invade other tissues of the body and release cancer cell into the bloodstream or lymphatic system which spread the cancer cell to other sites in the body.

Lung cancer is a very life-threatening cancer. Lung cancer is also one of the most difficult cancers to treat. Metastasis of lung cancer is very early in its course. Although lung cancer cell can spread to any organ in the body, the most common sites for lung cancer metastasis are adrenal glands, liver, brain, and bone.

In other hand, the lung is also a very common site for metastasis from cancers in other parts of the body. Metastasis in the lung has the same type of cells as the original or primary cancer. If cervical cancer spreads to the lung, we called it metastasic cervical cancer in the lung, and not lung cancer.
