ASBESTOS & LUNG CANCER
By Antin. Besides smoking (active and passive smoking) as primary cause of lung cancer, there are several things that have connected to lung cancer. Asbestos fibers, radon gas, and air pollution can be the causes of lung cancer. Genetic or familial predisposition may play a role as a cause of lung cancer. Lung diseases and prior history of lung cancer also give someone a greater to get lung cancer / secondary lung cancer.
Asbestos fibers After exposure to asbestos, the asbestos (silicate) fibers can persist for a lifetime in lung tissue. A common source of exposure to asbestos fibers is a workplace that was widely using asbestos for both thermal and acoustic insulation materials. Now, after relationship between asbestos and lung cancer have found, it use is limited or banned in many countries. Lung cancer and mesethelioma (cancer of pleura or of the lining of the abdominal cavity called the peritoneum) are associated with exposure to asbestos. Smoking cause drastically increases the risk of developing an asbestos-related lung cancer in exposed workers. Asbestos workers who do not smoke have a fivefold greater risk of developing lung cancer than nonsmokers. In other hand asbestos workers who smoke have a risk that is 50 to 90 times greater than nonsmokers.
