By Antin. Besides smoking (active and passive smoking) as primary cause of lung cancer, there are several things that have connected to lung cancer. Asbestos fibers, radon gas, and air pollution can be the causes of lung cancer. Genetic or familial predisposition may play a role as a cause of lung cancer. Lung diseases and prior history of lung cancer also give someone a greater to get lung cancer / secondary lung cancer.

The presence of certain diseases of the lung like COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), is associated with a slightly increased risk (four to six times the risk of a nonsmoker) for the development of lung cancer even after the effects of concomitant cigarette smoking are excluded.

Survivors of lung cancer have a greater risk than the general population of developing a secondary lung cancer. Survivors of non-small cell lung cancers (NSCLC) have an additive risk of 1%-2% per year for developing a secondary lung cancer. In other hand survivors of small cell lung cancers (SCLC), the risk for development of second lung cancers approaches 6% per year.
