Important things about Prostate Cancer Treatment

The facts show that prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in men after lung cancer in the USA and it has high prostate cancer recurrence rates. These are several important things in prostate cancer treatment to avoid its fatality and high recurrence.
- Early detection is the most important thing in prostate cancer treatment. If prostate cancer is detected early, using PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) determination, DRE (Digital Rectal Examination) and biopsies, and treated appropriately, survival rates are excellent.
- Treatments of prostate cancer can be very complex due to:
- Pathology of prostate cancer
- The effects of prostate treatment on quality of life, including sexual activity
- Stage of prostate cancer
- PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) at diagnosis
- Age and general status of patient’s health
- Patient’s preference for prostate cancer treatment
- Deferred treatment often called ‘watchful waiting’ or ‘active surveillance’
- Surgery for prostate cancer called Radical Prostatectomy
- Radiotherapy for prostate cancer can use External Beam and/or Brach therapy
- Hormonal (endocrine) therapy such as Androgen Ablation e.g. anti-androgens, medical castration (LHRHa) or surgical castration
- Chemotherapy
- Palliative Therapy e.g. chemotherapy
