Types of Skin Cancer
By Antin. Melanoma, a deadly form of skin cancer can divide to six morphologic types.
· Superficial spread melanoma is the most common type of melanoma and follows a long growth pattern before it becomes invasive. This type of melanoma looks like a flat or slight, brown lesion with irregular asymmetric borders and with a pink, blue or black discoloration. It can occur anywhere on the body, especially in the head and neck area. Commonly this type of melanoma also can occur on the male’s trunk and female’s lower extremities.
· Nodular melanoma is a less common type of melanoma that occurs and can spread to nearby areas extremely fast. The symptom of this skin cancer is a dark brown to black papule or dome-shape nodule. This type of melanoma can occur anywhere on the body, especially on the male’s trunk.
· Lentigo maligna melanoma is another rare form of melanoma. This skin cancer follows a long growth pattern before it becomes invasive. The symptom of this melanoma is a lesion larger than 3 cm and becomes dark brown to black color or as blue-black nodes during the invasive phase. This type of melanoma is caused by sunlight and occurs in sun exposure areas of the skin
· Acral-lentiginous melanoma is a rare form of melanoma. This skin cancer commonly develops in dark-skinned people. It is an aggressive type of melanoma that follows a progressive growth pattern.
· Amelanotic melanoma is a very rare form of melanoma. This type of melanoma is difficult to diagnose due to the lack of pigmentation.
· Desmoplastic melanoma is another rare form of melanoma. This skin cancer is an aggressive type of cancer and is difficult to diagnose. This type of melanoma commonly develops in elderly patients and usually occurs on the head or neck area.
